Saraswati, goddess of knowledge and the arts

Saraswati is worshipped as the goddess of knowledge, learning, music and speech. Students, teachers, musicians and writers often pray to her before study or performance, and her festival, Vasant Panchami, is traditionally celebrated in many regions at the start of spring with books and instruments placed before her.

Common forms of Saraswati in marble

  • Seated Saraswati playing the veena, usually with four arms, the other hands holding a book (pustaka) and a mala.
  • Saraswati seated on a white lotus or a rock beside water.
  • Saraswati with her vahana, the swan (hamsa), which traditionally symbolises discernment. A peacock appears in some depictions.
  • Standing Saraswati holding the veena, sometimes chosen for larger spaces.

Why white marble suits Saraswati

Saraswati is traditionally associated with the colour white, symbolising purity and clarity, and is often described as dressed in white and seated on a white lotus. For this reason many devotees choose a plain white marble murti, perhaps with light gold detailing on the veena and ornaments, rather than a fully painted finish.

Saraswati for schools and study spaces

A Saraswati murti is a common choice for school prayer halls, music academies, libraries and a child's study corner. For a shared or public space, think about the viewing distance and whether the murti will stand on a pedestal. For a desk or shelf, a smaller seated form is usually more practical.

FAQ

Saraswati murti questions

Is a Saraswati murti suitable for a child's study room?

Many families keep a small Saraswati murti in a study area as a reminder of learning and focus. Some prefer to keep all murtis in the main mandir, so follow whatever feels right for your household and tradition.

Why is Saraswati shown with a swan?

The swan is traditionally said to be able to separate milk from water, and so symbolises discernment, the ability to tell the true from the false. It is Saraswati's most commonly depicted vahana.

Can I order a Saraswati murti for a school or music academy?

You are welcome to send the required height, the space it will stand in and any reference images through the custom order form, and we will reply with what is possible.
