Why devotees keep a Hanuman murti

Hanuman is revered for his strength, courage and complete devotion to Shri Ram. Many devotees turn to him for protection and for help in overcoming difficulties. In many regions Tuesdays and Saturdays are traditionally associated with his worship, along with festivals such as Hanuman Jayanti.

Common forms of Hanuman in marble

  • Standing Hanuman holding his gada (mace), often with one hand raised in blessing.
  • Hanuman carrying the Sanjeevani mountain, recalling the Ramayana episode in which he brought the healing herb for Lakshman.
  • Panchmukhi Hanuman, with five faces traditionally identified as Hanuman, Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha and Hayagriva. This form is associated with protection.
  • Kneeling or devotional Hanuman with hands folded in namaste, often placed facing Ram or as part of a Ram Darbar.
  • Hanuman opening his chest to reveal Ram and Sita, a form that expresses the depth of his devotion.

Placement and pairing

Hanuman may be kept on his own or alongside Ram, Sita and Lakshman. Practices around placement vary by region and family: some households keep a Hanuman murti near the entrance or facing a particular direction, while others place him within the main mandir. Following your own tradition or your priest's guidance is the simplest approach.

What to consider before you enquire

Standing and Sanjeevani forms are usually taller than they are wide, so check the internal height of your mandir. If you already have a Ram Darbar, a kneeling Hanuman in a matching scale and finish can sit well beside it. Many Hanuman murtis are coloured with sindoor or painted, which looks quite different from plain white marble, so decide which suits your worship.
