Why Ganesh is often the first murti in a home

Ganesh is worshipped as the remover of obstacles and is traditionally invoked at the start of prayers, ceremonies and new ventures. For that reason many families choose a Ganesh murti as the first murti for a new home mandir, a new house or a new business.

Common forms of Ganesh in marble

  • Seated Ganesh, usually in lalitasana with one leg folded, is the most common form for home worship.
  • Standing Ganesh is often chosen for entrances and larger spaces.
  • Ganesh on a lotus base or with his vahana, the mouse (mushak), at his feet.
  • Trunk direction: the trunk may curve to Ganesh's left or right. Many households prefer a left-curving trunk for home worship. Right-curving (Siddhi Vinayak) forms are traditionally associated with stricter observances, so it is worth discussing this with your family or priest.

What to consider before you enquire

Think about where the murti will sit, the height of the shelf or mandir, and whether it will be viewed from below, at eye level or from above. A piece that looks right in a photograph can feel very different in a small alcove. Our size guide explains how to measure your space.
