Short answer

Are Hindu marble statues and marble murtis the same thing?

They are often the same object described in different words. 'Statue' is common in international searches, while 'murti' is the traditional term for a sacred image made for worship. A murti follows the traditional iconography of its deity: posture, attributes and proportions.

  • Home mandirs and puja rooms: small and medium murtis for daily worship. Murtis for homes.
  • Temples: larger murtis made to the sanctum’s proportions, usually chosen with the temple priest or committee. Murtis for temples.
  • Entrances, offices and interiors: Ganesh and Lakshmi are often placed at entrances and places of business.
  • Gifts: for housewarmings, weddings, new businesses and festivals such as Diwali.

What makes a good marble statue

Proportion, a calm and expressive face, clean detailing of hands, ornaments and clothing, and an even finish. Look at close-up photographs and ask for more if you need them. Our guide to choosing a marble murti goes into detail.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between a murti and a statue?

A statue is any sculpted figure. A murti is a sacred image made for worship, following traditional iconography for the deity's posture, attributes and proportions. Many murtis are formally consecrated before worship begins. The same marble figure can be displayed as art or installed as a murti.

Can a Hindu marble statue be used for decoration?

Many people display deity sculptures respectfully in living rooms, entrances or offices. If the figure will be worshipped, place it where it can be kept clean and treated with care, and follow your family's customs.

Is a murti the same as an idol?

In English, murtis are often called idols, and many people search for 'marble idols'. Devotees usually prefer the word murti, meaning a sacred form or image of the deity. On this website we use murti, but the pieces are the same.

Which deities are most often made in marble?

Ganesh, Radha Krishna, Krishna, Hanuman, Shiva, Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati are among the most requested, along with groups such as Ram Darbar and Shiv Parivar, and Shivling and Nandi for Shiva shrines.
